Former FBI Director James Comey offered a veiled criticism when he reacted to reports the FBI's top lawyer was being reassigned, stating the agency's current leadership was being "attacked for partisan gain," The Hill reported Saturday morning.

"Sadly, we are now at a point in our political life when anyone can be attacked for partisan gain. James Baker, who is stepping down as FBI General Counsel, served our country incredibly well for 25 years & deserves better. He is what we should all want our public servants to be," Comey tweeted Friday night.

Since being fired by President Donald Trump in May, Comey has refrained from making direct comments about matters of politics, often communicating through tweets that are quotes by notable people. It was reported Thursday that Baker had contacted colleagues the day before in an email, telling them he was being reassigned from his position as the FBI top lawyer, according to The Washington Post.

The agency's new Director Christopher Wray has been reorganizing some of the top leadership of the department after taking over as the FBI chief. President Donald Trump appointed Wray to the position after firing Comey last May. Trump has been critical of the FBI, describing the agency as in "tatters" over reports of bias within the department.

Baker was allegedly connected to reports of a leaked dossier that claimed connections between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russia. Though he was investigated regarding the leak, no charges were brought against Baker.
