Fifty-four percent of voters say President Donald Trump has been successful in business, while 36% say he has not, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll.
However, when told of a New York Times story that the president reported more than $1 billion in loses from 1985 to 1994, opinions shifted, with 43% calling him successful in business, compared to 41% rating him as unsuccessful. Trump has called the report in the Times “a highly inaccurate fake news hit job.”
Here are highlights from the poll released Wednesday:
- 41% approved of the job Trump is doing as president, compared to 56% who disapproved.
- 37% would definitely or probably vote to re-elect Trump, while 55% would definitely or probably vote for someone else.
- 42% have more trust in congressional Republicans to handle the economy, compared to 35% who have more trust in Democrats.
- 47% said they have more trust in Democratic lawmakers to handle healthcare, while 31% said they have more trust in Republicans to handle the issue.
- 35% said Congress should begin impeachment proceedings against Trump, while 50% said it should not.
- 31% approved of the way Attorney General William Barr handled the release of information from special counsel Robert Mueller’s report, compared to 38% who said they did not.
The poll, conducted May 10-12, surveyed 1,995 registered voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
