Rasmussen Poll: Two-Thirds Agree on Ending Corporate Welfare

By    |   Friday, 26 January 2024 05:52 PM EST

Nearly two-thirds of U.S. voters favor ending "corporate welfare," or government handouts to business, according to a poll released Friday by Rasmussen Reports and the Woodford Foundation.

The national telephone and online survey of 1,178 likely voters conducted Jan. 17 found that that 64% said government should not give handouts to businesses. The poll had a margin of error of +/- 3 percentages points with a 95% level of confidence. Only 20% disagreed and 16% were not sure.

In a rarity among a divisive electorate, this issue found agreement across the political spectrum, with 63% of Republicans in favor, along with 64% of Democrats and 64% of those not affiliated with either party.

The poll also found that 57% agreed that taxes and government spending should be cut 50% or more. A majority of Republicans (74%) and unaffiliated voters (54%) favored such a proposal, with 46% of Democrats agreeing.

"In general, voters who are married with children are most in favor of proposals to reduce the size and expense of government," the poll found. "For example, on the question of whether taxes and government spending should be reduced by 50%, married-with-children voters agree by more than a 2-to-1 margin, 62% to 25%."

Among other findings, 46% believe Obamacare should be repealed, with 42% disagreeing and 12% unsure. Demographically, 46% of white voters, 39% of Black voters, 52% of Hispanics, and 51% of other minorities support repealing Obamacare; 52% believe government should do much less, and allow people to work things out voluntarily among themselves; 44% believe people should be able to control their own retirement and Social Security should be privatized; and 38% agree that global warming is not a threat to the world, but 55% disagree.
