Sixty-two percent of Americans favor gay marriage, while 32 percent oppose it, a new Pew Research poll revealed.

Here are the highlights from the survey:

  • 48 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents oppose gay marriage, compared to 47 percent who favor it.
  • 76 percent of Democrats and Democratic-learning independents favor same-sex marriage, while 19 percent oppose it.
  • 56 percent of Baby Boomers support gay marriage, while 39 percent oppose it. This marks the first time a majority of Baby Boomers favor the issue.

"Two years after the Supreme Court decision that required states to recognize same-sex marriages nationwide, support for allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally is at its highest point in over 20 years of Pew Research Center polling on the issue," officials said, according to the survey.

"Views on same-sex marriage have shifted dramatically in recent years. As recently as 2010, more Americans opposed (48 percent) than favored (42 percent) allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally."

The poll was taken by telephone with 2,504 U.S. adults nationwide and has a margin of error of 2.3 percentage points.
