The number of hospitalizations in the U.S. involving pizza reportedly jumped by more than 50% in 2018 compared to 2017.
Citing statistics analyzed by medical service provider Babylon Health, San Francisco news outlet KRON reported that there were 3,800 visits to the emergency room two years ago related to pizza. That number compares to 2,300 injuries in 2017.
Pie-related injuries in 2018 ranged from cutting one’s finger with a pizza cutter, to poking the roof of the mouth with a fork while eating pizza, to falling down the stairs while carrying a box of pizza, the news outlet reported.
Findings were based on medical records from an extrapolated sample of 100 emergency departments across the country in which the word “pizza” was included in doctors’ notes.
