Roger Stone testified "very openly" before the House Intelligence Committee, and it's hard to tell what special counsel Robert Mueller is accusing him of lying about, Rep. Pete King said Tuesday.
"Any time a person testifies for four-and-a-half hours, you can always go through it and find some misstatement," the New York Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."
"The question is, was it intentional, did it serve a purpose, or was it an honest mistake?"
Stone pleaded not guilty Tuesday in federal court in Washington D.C. to charges of lying to congressional investigators, obstruction, and witness tampering.
He was arrested during a daybreak raid Friday at his home in Florida, and King called the move a "terrible abuse of power."
"It is really to me just a police state tactic and it was horribly wrong," said King.
The lawmaker said he's known Stone for several years, and pointed out that none of the charges against him involve Russian collusion, the reason for Mueller's investigation.
It would also be the "worst penalty" if a judge would issue a gag order on Stone, said King.
"Roger just loves the limelight, loves talking, and is just a very outgoing character," said King. "I don't know him that well, but on and off for 35 years. There is never a dull moment with Roger Stone."
