Rick Perry: Next President Will Not Be a Senator

By    |   Sunday, 09 Nov 2014 11:01 PM

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, expected to toss his hat into the ring for the 2016  GOP presidential nomination, predicts the next commander-in-chief will not be a senator.

Perry, speaking to Brietbart News in an interview published Sunday, had just finished an extensive rebuke of the leadership of President Barack Obama – a former senator from  Illinois – when he was asked whether he believed another senator would succeed Obama.

"No," Perry answered.

"If you're in the Senate or if you're in the House, you can give a speech and then go home. Governors can't. We have to govern," Perry told Breitbart. "And the president of the United States, historically, has had to operate that way, too; the ones that were successful. And one of the reasons why this president is not successful is because he's never had that experience."

Perry's words echoed those of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who told "Meet the Press" Sunday that governors make better presidents because they are outsiders to Washington and are used to getting things done rather than talking.

Walker, too, is expected to seek the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.

Perry was in New Hampshire on Sunday in what Fox News described as an unofficial kickoff to his campaign. New Hampshire holds the nation's first primaries, following the Iowa caucuses.

Perry discussed likely issues in the 2016 campaign in Concord, Fox reported, including health care, immigration, Ebola and the economy.

"Over the past six years, I’ve had the opportunity to be very vocal,” Perry told potential voters. "There’s a lot I didn’t agree with. Whether it was issues of healthcare … having an IRS getting into people’s business because they didn’t like your political stance, whether it was the NSA listening in on our phone calls, whether it was an absolute total debacle of letting down the men and women who put their lives on the line for us with the veteran’s administration."

Perry is leaving office in January, but pledged to continue working with Washington on protecting the border if he is wanted.

"We know how to do this. Let’s get it done," he said.

In the Breitbart interview, Perry said Obama is likely to go down in history as America's worst president.

He said if Obama follows through on his promise of granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants "he will be guaranteed that slot. Because the American people will not accept an executive order that basically takes our constitution and throws it out the window. They will not accept that."
