Pelosi: House Bill Vital for Reining in Prescription Drug Costs

By    |   Friday, 27 September 2019 10:21 AM EDT

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Friday called for the passage of a House bill developed to help rein in prescription drug costs.

"One of the answers is HR-3," Pelosi, a California Democrat, told MSNBC's "Morning Joe," noting that it allows for negotiations for lower prices and to charge a noncompliance fee if companies don't honor their responsibilities.

"We have a formula, so that the five or six times what we pay, versus what other countries pay, will no longer be the case," said Pelosi. "This will not only be negotiated for Medicare, but it will be negotiated for beyond Medicare. It will have transparency. It will have availability. It is transformative."

Every household in America has been hurt by high medication costs, said Pelosi.

"I have seen grown men cry on the campaign trail because they will tell a story that they can't afford the medicine, whether it is for a child or a spouse or themselves," said Pelosi. "This is about the financial security of families as well as the health security of families."

The House has sent several other bills to the GOP-controlled Senate, only to have them blocked, but Pelosi said HR-3 is vital.

"Much of the development of drugs ... has been developed by the public dollars at the National Institutes of Health," said Pelosi, adding that even if HR-3 doesn't go as far as some people will want, it is "transformative" and President Donald Trump should sign it.
