House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, while leading a large bipartisan delegation of senators and representatives in Normandy to observe the D-Day commemoration ceremonies, said Thursday she wouldn't comment on impeachment or on reports that she'd told Democrats earlier this week that she'd rather see President Donald Trump in prison rather than impeached.
"With all due respect to your question, I'm not here to talk about impeachment," the California Democrat told MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell. "We always strive to work in a bipartisan way. This is not a departure from what we set as a standard. We try to be as bipartisan, non-partisan as possible. That's a comfort to veterans."
Instead, Pelosi, speaking to Mitchell before Trump delivered his well-received speech, preferred to speak of the sacrifice of those who were storming the beach.
"They were children," she said."Many of them were teenagers...they had so much courage. When you listen to them and they tell their story, it's different. Some say I was very afraid. Others say I was praying to God. Others say I didn't know how to swim and I was hoping for the best. They all had their individual stories."
Pelosi said the sacrifices were "monumental" and enables Americans to have their debates and differences of opinions, including the current on immigration, but "we do have to remember the values, that freedom isn't free."
"No one said it better than Ronald Reagan…(he said) that we cannot close the door or else we won't be the country that leads the world," said Pelosi, adding that she thinks everyone should re-read Reagan's speech from Normandy, as he talked about the importance of alliances and working together.
