House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi likes the idea of including a plank in support of gay marriage in the 2012 Democratic Party platform, according to
Metro Weekly, a gay-oriented magazine in Washington, D.C.
No Democratic platform has yet included such support, which President Barack Obama opposed in 2008. But he said in December 2010 that his views on gay marriage were “evolving.”
The advocacy group Freedom to Marry launched a campaign Monday to bring gay marriage into the platform. Its version of the plank reads, in part, “We support the Respect for Marriage Act and the overturning of the federal so-called Defense of Marriage Act, and oppose discriminatory constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny the freedom to marry to loving and committed same-sex couples."
As for Pelosi, her spokesman, Drew Hammill, told Metro Weekly, "Leader Pelosi supports this language."
