Biden Halts Deportation of Palestinians for 18 Months

By    |   Wednesday, 14 February 2024 08:02 PM EST

President Joe Biden has temporarily halted the deportation of thousands of Palestinians residing in the United States, a decision influenced by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, according to The New York Times.

This measure, effective for 18 months, will benefit approximately 6,000 Palestinians through the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) program, designed for immigrants from countries experiencing instability or conflict.

The initiative is a response to the escalating violence following the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas, with Biden noting the peril civilians continue to face in Gaza.

Criticism of the Gaza war has intensified among various groups in the U.S., with some calling for a reevaluation of the substantial military aid provided to Israel. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties and destruction, particularly in Gaza, following Israel's retaliatory actions against Hamas' initial attacks.

The exemption from deportation does not apply to individuals with felony convictions or those considered public safety threats.
