After Oprah Winfrey gave a speech at the Golden Globe awards ceremony Sunday night, two of her friends told CNN she is "actively thinking" about running for president.
The friends requested anonymity so they could speak freely about the topic. Some of Winfrey's confidants have been urging her to become a candidate, the sources told CNN.
One source said talk of running has been going on for several months, but emphasized that she has not made up her mind, CNN reported.
A 2020 presidential bid became a popular topic after Winfrey accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Globe ceremony.
"A new day is on the horizon," Winfrey said in her speech.
Strategists have pointed out that her wealth and fame as the host for decades of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" could make her a formidable presidential candidate.
However, she has no political experience. She is the CEO of the OWN cable channel, a correspondent for CBS' "60 Minutes" and an investor in companies such as Weight Watchers, CNN noted.
Fans have portrayed her as a perfect candidate to counter President Donald Trump.
"She launched a rocket tonight. I want her to run for president," actress Meryl Street told The Washington Post.
"I don't think she had any intention (of declaring her candidacy). But now she doesn't have a choice," Streep added.
Winfrey's longtime partner, Stedman Graham, told the Los Angeles Times "she would absolutely do it."
