President Barack Obama has received a letter from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the accused mastermind behind the Sept. 11 terror attacks who has been held at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp since 2006.

Mohammed originally tried to send the letter to the president in 2014, according to the Miami Herald, but Guantanamo Bay officials refused to send it. A recent court order, however, allowed to letter to be delivered to Obama before he leaves office.

A White House source told the Herald Obama has received it, although it was unclear whether he has read it.

According to Mohammed's lawyer David Nevin, the letter contained his thoughts on "Muslim oppression at the hands of the West in general and the United States in particular." The Herald reported in 2014 that Mohammed quoted the Koran, former President Richard Nixon, and the Bible in the letter. He also referenced issues such as same-sex marriage and the U.S. military suicide rate.

The Herald notes that Obama will likely be allowed to take the letter with him after he departs the White House for the last time as president even though it contains classified information.

Mohammed was captured in Pakistan in 2003 and was held at several secret CIA prisons overseas, where he was subjected to enhanced interrogation techniques. He was eventually transferred to military custody in 2006 and was brought to Guantanamo Bay, where he is now housed in the top secret Camp 7 — whose location on the Naval base is not publicly known.
