More than half of Americans believe the Obama administration is trying to cover up facts about the terrorist attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, a new poll has found.
According to a
Washington Post-ABC News poll, 55 percent of respondents say the Obama administration is hiding facts about the incident that took the lives of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans on Sept. 11, 2012. Just 33 percent say the government has honestly disclosed what it knows.
Republicans aren't the only ones who take that view. Six in 10 independents and nearly three in 10 Democrats surveyed agree the administration is not being forthright, according to the poll of 1,001 adults conducted May 16-19.
The views expressed in the survey, however, appeared to be evenly split over the question of whether Republicans are using the controversy to score political points. Forty-five percent say congressional Republicans are engaging in political posturing, while 44 percent say they are raising legitimate concerns, the poll found.
