The Paris prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into Notre Dame cathedral’s “involuntary destruction by fire,” after the historic building was nearly destroyed on Monday.
The French newspaper Le Monde reports that the Regional Director of Judicial Police will lead the investigation into the cause of the fire, which Paris public prosecutor Remy Heitz said is thought to be “an accident.”
"It will be a long, complex investigation, which will combine police work with technical elements and expertise," an unnamed police officer told Le Monde, according to Newsweek.
The Daily Mail claims that prosecutors are focused on the contractors that were working on the cathedral’s restoration, Le Bras Freres or the Bras Brothers. Specialists were reportedly working on Notre Dame’s spire when the fire started.
The firm started in Northern France in 1954, and has worked on multiple restoration projects, including work on the Louvre Museum, the Royal Chapel at Versailles, and the Arles Amphitheatre, according to the French newspaper Le Républicain Lorrain.
