Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Monday called on Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam to resign, joining with many of his colleagues in calling for the Democrat to step down.
A photo from the governor’s 1984 medical school yearbook page showed a person in blackface standing with a person in a Ku Klux Klan outfit. The governor denied being one of the people in the picture, but did admit to wearing blackface on a separate occasion around that same time.
Schumer tweeted on Monday that he agrees with Virginia Democratic Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, also former governors of the state, who joined with Rep. Bobby Scott, also a Democrat, to call on Northam to resign.
“After we watched his press conference today, we called Governor Northam to tell him that we no longer believe he can effectively serve as Governor of Virginia and that he must resign,” the legislators said in a joint statement.
“I agree,” Schumer tweeted in response to Scott’s tweet of the statement. “It’s past time. Governor Northam should resign so Virginia can move forward.”
Northam has reportedly met with his Cabinet and senior staff on Monday to determine whether he should resign, according to The Washington Post.
