After meeting with President Donald Trump last week, and seeing the U.S. as more prepared for trade talks with the U.K., Brexit leader Nigel Farage is planning to start his own preparations, according to the Washington Examiner.
"If the British government is not prepared to do it, at least allow me to get a group of people to start making some public arguments," Farage told the Examiner in an exclusive interview.
Farage, who has been in political agreement with President Trump, is organizing a team to meet with U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer, he told the paper.
Farage, 55, has seen a rise in his political cachet amid the U.K.'s inability to agree on a Brexit deal with the European Union and Farage's Brexit Party pulled more than 30% of the vote in the EU elections.
Now, Farage tells the Examiner, he wants to help the U.K. catch up on trade deal preparations with the U.S. after Lighthizer's office submitted an 18-page summary of trade intentions.
"What I'm looking for here is a counterweight argument," Farage said. "I get a wall of silence from our trade department.
"So, if I can get some names involved who can come back and say, 'Well, we've looked at the American proposals. On the whole they're good. . . . We're not happy with this bit and this bit . . . but we have got a negotiation going on,' maybe we can look at some of this in a much more positive light."
