Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage said Monday his party will "stun everybody" if Britain does not leave the European Union on Oct. 31, and at least one British media outlet is speculating the controversial politician could become prime minister.
"The Brexit Party is only six weeks old," Farage told "Good Morning Britain" early Monday, while making his victory rounds after the Brexit Party won 28 of the 73 British EU seats that were up for grabs, taking almost one-third of the vote. "This is one hell of an achievement."
The next deadline for Britain to leave the European Union comes up on Oct. 31, Farage pointed out, and "that date will become a bigger and bigger factor in people's minds as these next five months go by."
Should a general election be called later this year and if the Brexit Party win, that could put Farage in the prime minister's seat, notes Britain's Metro.co, which also was careful to note it could be a long shot for him to win.
Conservatives lost 15 seats in the Parliament. The Labour Party has said it will call for a no-confidence vote in the next prime minister, and that could bring a general election.
"We just have a few more battles to fight," Farage said Monday, adding he will work with any upcoming prime minister who will "achieve Brexit" and who is "genuine about us leaving the EU."
