A shocking study by the New York City Police Department reveals cops who worked at the smoldering World Trade Center site after the 9/11 attacks had 50 percent more instances of cancer than officers did in the years before the tragedy.
The
New York Post, which obtained a copy of the 20-year study, says the findings reveal that 859 cops were diagnosed with cancer. Eleven had more than one diagnosis for a total of 870 cases.
The study, according to The Post, also showed overall cancer rates increased roughly 50 percent between 2002 and 2014 compared with the period between 1995 and 2001.
Diagnoses included colon, prostate and female breast cancers.
In addition, about 56 percent of the police officers who came down with cancer served at the Twin Towers site within 24 hours of the attacks, The Post said. That period is when the toxic cloud of dust and debris was at its worst.
