More than three-quarters of voters — including 54% of Democrats — say they have "moderate" to "major" concerns about the age and fitness of President Joe Biden, according to a new NBC News poll released Tuesday.
Regarding his likely opponent in the 2024 general election, Donald Trump, only 48% said they have the same age and health concerns about the Republican front-runner.
Voters harbor different concerns about Trump, with 61% of registered voters saying they have "moderate" to "major" concerns about the four different criminal trials that await him, two directly from Biden's Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith, according to the survey.
Among the 76% of those who say they are concerned about Biden's health ahead of a potential second term, 81% of those identify as independent. Less than a quarter of those surveyed overall (24%) say they have minor or no concerns about Biden.
The poll comes out two days after Biden confused French President Emmanuel Macron with former President Francois Mitterrand (1981-95). During a campaign speech, Biden told supporters that he had talked to "Mitterrand from Germany" in 2021. Mitterrand died in 1996.
Trump's legal troubles worry 65% of independents and 27% of Republicans, while 39% of those surveyed overall say their concerns range from minor to none.
"Yes, voters are more concerned about Biden's age than Trump's trials," Democrat pollster Jeff Horwitt said in the analysis. "But Biden is still getting 17% among voters who have major concerns about his age, while just 10% of voters who have major concerns about Trump's trials are voting for him."
NBC News surveyed 1,000 registered voters from Jan. 26-30. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 points.
