German officials say the 95-year-old former Nazi concentration camp guard who was deported from the U.S. is not expected to stand trial, The Guardian newspaper is reporting.
Jakiw Palij, who was stripped of his U.S. citizenship because he lied about his collaboration with the Nazis during World War II, was deported to Germany on Tuesday.
The U.S. says he was a Nazi guard at the Trawniki camp who helped to prevent the escape of prisoners.
He had lived in New York City, but was ordered deported in 2004. However, he continued to live in limbo because no country would accept him until the Trump administration convinced Germany to take him in.
“Right now, there is no investigation into him in Germany, which means there is no arrest warrant and as a result it is not very likely that he will ever be convicted,” Jens Rommel, who heads the Central Office for the Investigation of Nazi Crimes in Ludwigsburg told German television on Wednesday.
