House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Friday that the Trump Administration did not inform her of plans for a military strike against Iran Thursday night, The Washington Post reports.
Pelosi was asked at a congressional event Friday morning whether she had been notified of the plan for a strike in response to the shooting of a U.S. drone Thursday afternoon. The congresswoman answered, “No.”
The Post notes that the leaders of the House and Senate, as well as the chair and ranking members on various committees, are usually informed of military actions. Although senior legislators were briefed about some plans for a response to the shooting, the White House did not make or reveal plans for a strike at that time.
“We are in an extremely dangerous and sensitive situation with Iran. We must calibrate a response that de-escalates and advances American interests, and we must be clear as to what those interests are,” Pelosi said in a statement released Friday afternoon.
“During our meeting with the President at the White House, Congressional Leaders stressed the necessity that we work with our allies and not strengthen the hand of Iran’s hardliners,” she added. “Democratic Leaders emphasized that hostilities must not be initiated without the approval of Congress. We have no illusions about the dangerous conduct of the Iranian regime. This is a dangerous, high-tension situation that requires a strong, smart and strategic approach.”
