Nancy Pelosi to Visit Border Detention Facility

By    |   Friday, 27 June 2014 05:44 PM EDT

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi heads to a crowded Texas detention facility Saturday for a briefing on the flood of immigrant children pouring across the nation's southern border.

The California Democrat will be at the South Texas Detention Facility for the update by Customs and Border Protection. Politico reported Friday Pelosi won't meet with any of the children.

The Department of Homeland Security estimates more than 52,000 children have been swept up along the southwestern border since October, MSNBC reports.

Most of the children have fled from Guatemala, Honduras. and El Salvador, and officials believe their numbers may swell to 90,000 this year.

"The humanitarian crisis unfolding across our nation's southern border demands Congress come together and find thoughtful, compassionate, and bipartisan solutions," the California Democrat said in a statement.

"We must ensure our laws are fully enforced, so that due process is provided to unaccompanied children, and the safety and well-being of unaccompanied children is protected. We must also work to address the root causes of the problem."

Pelosi will be accompanied by other congressional Democrats representing the House Homeland Security Committee and Congressional Hispanic Caucus, including Reps. Filemon Vela and Ruben Hinojosa of Texas, and Steven Horsford of Nevada.
