A Muslim cop who decided to start wearing her hijab on duty is now suing the NYPD, citing years of harassment from her fellow officers.
Danielle Alamrani, an American Muslim, claims she was both verbally and physically abused by her colleagues for years in the New York Police Department, reported the Washington Post.
The abuse apparently began when Alamrani, who converted to Islam just a year after joining the 94th Precinct in 2006, started wearing her hijab to work in 2008, putting her faith on public display.
According to the lawsuit, officers have attempted to rip the hijab off Alamrani’s head.
She’s had colleagues call her a “Muslim b****” and a “moving target.” She’s even had fellow officers blurt out terrorist jokes to her directly, saying things like try not to “detonate on patrol,” the Post noted.
Officers went as far as post pictures of Alamrani on Facebook 2015, looking to damage her image, said Mid-Day.
An officer posted pictures of her at the gun range wearing her hijab — a post that led to backlash for the 38-year-old. The posts prompted Alamrani to take her complaints to the NYPD with evidence of the harassment, but they went nowhere.
According to the lawsuit, the officer who posted the pictures was not penalized, but instead “retaliated against her by filing a complaint with child services,” Mid-Day noted.
“You do expect police officers to have thicker skin and be able to deal with other people,” said Jesse C. Rose, Alamrani’s attorney, per the Washington Post. “But you don’t expect them to have do that with their own colleagues.”
According to DNAInfo.com, Alamrani was transferred to a different precinct in 2015.
“I certainly hope that this is something that no one else would have to deal with,” Alamrani’s attorney said, according to Fusion. “I hope that those that are within the NYPD take notice and take actions to make sure this never happens again.”
