There is a public clamoring for the firing of MSNBC host Chris Matthews after he made a reference to the Nazi invasion of France in talking about the blowout Nevada caucus victory of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

During a conversation with anchor Brian Williams Saturday night, Matthews likened the democratic socialist's sweeping Nevada victory to the Nazi's victory over France in World War II.

"I was reading last night, Brian — I know that you're a history guy — I'm reading last night about the fall of France in the summer of 1940," Matthews said. "And the general, Reynaud, calls up Churchill and says, 'It's over.' And Churchill says, 'How can it be? You've got the greatest army in Europe. How can it be over?' He said, 'It's over.'"

Sanders is Jewish and lost family members in the Holocaust.

Mike Casca, Sanders' 2020 communications director, tweeted:

"never thought part of my job would be pleading with a national news network to stop likening the campaign of a jewish presidential candidate whose family was wiped out by the nazis to the third reich."

Another Sanders aide, David Sirota, tweeted:

"A few days ago, @chucktodd read a passage likening Bernie voters to Nazi brown shirts. Now Chris Matthews is likening Bernie's campaign to a Nazi invasion. Bernie is Jewish and his family was killed by the Nazis. None of this is OK."

The Sanders staffers' response was muted compared to others calling for Matthews' firing from MSNBC, as the U.K.'s Independent reported from tweets.
