Former Vice President Joe Biden has surged 7 percentage points since his victory in the South Carolina primary, closing the gap behind leader Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., from 13 points to only three on the eve of Super Tuesday, according to a Morning Consult poll released Monday.
Biden has the support of 26% of Democratic primary voters, while Sanders fell three points to 29%
Other results from the survey indicate:
- Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is in third place at 17%, down 1 percentage point from the previous poll, followed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who is at 11%.
- Coming in fifth place is former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg at 10%, followed by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., at 3%, with both these candidates losing a percentage point since the past poll and deciding to withdraw from the race.
- 31% of blacks support both Sanders and Biden. Among Hispanics, support for Biden shot up 9 points to 21%, but Sanders still has more than twice that backing him.
- In the average of polling from the 14 Super Tuesday states, Sanders leads with 33%. Biden has 24%, a gain of 7 points since the last survey. Support for Bloomberg in these states is down four points to 16%.
- 33% said Biden has the best chance of beating Trump, which is 16 points higher than a survery taken after his losses in Nevada and New Hampshire.
- 31% said Sanders is the most electable, a drop of 3 points since his Nevada victory.
The poll was conducted among 2,656 voters who indicated they might vote in the Democratic primary or caucus in their state and has a 2-point margin of error.
