Obama Considers Allowing Morning After Pill in Supermarkets

The Obama administration is considering the controversial possibility of letting anyone of any age buy the morning-after pill Plan B directly from drugstore and supermarket shelves without a prescription, The Washington Post reports.

The Food and Drug Administration has until today  to respond to a request from the makers of the drug to make it as easy to get as "toilet paper," the Post says.

The effort is part of a national push by doctors, family-planning activists, and members of Congress to help women prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Those opposed say the drug has powerful hormones that could put some women and girls at risk, and that such access would prevent parents from intervening in their children's behavior. They add that it would also make it easier for adults to prey on minors.
