Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., disclosed he is battling prostate cancer, the Washington Examiner is reporting.
Brooks is scheduled to undergo a prostatectomy on Friday and will likely spend the next week at home, according to the Examiner.
"God works in mysterious ways," Brooks said. "When you are an elected official, missed votes require an explanation. That's why I disclose this very personal, very private and very humbling matter."
He said he found out about the cancer when his doctor called him with the news on Halloween night.
"I felt an adrenaline rush as a chill went up and down my spine," he said.
Ironically, Brooks' loss to Roy Moore in the Alabama Republican primary for Senate may have saved his life.
"Had I won, I would not have had time for my physical and PSA test," he said. "I would not have had a prostate biopsy. I would not have known about my high-risk prostate cancer that requires immediate surgery. In retrospect and paradoxically, losing the Senate race may have saved my life."
The Hill noted prostate cancer runs in the lawmaker's family — his father and grandfather had been diagnosed with it.
Meanwhile, Brooks is urging people to not take their health for granted.
"During the holidays, enjoy your family, because no one, no one, is promised tomorrow," he said.
