Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., said Tuesday that the federal government should end all support to the NFL while players continue to kneel in protest during the national anthem.

"I believe we ought to terminate all federal government support of the NFL," Brooks said in an interview with Breitbart News. "That would include the termination of any and all advertising that is done on behalf of the federal government — military and nonmilitary — to the extent we do any."

"The same thing with any other professional sport that insults our country and our flag and our anthem as the NFL has done," he added.

Two reports in 2015, one from CNN and another from NJ.com, show that the federal government provides billions in subsidies, and that the Department of Defense gives money to over a dozen NFL teams in exchange for military promotions and advertising.

"I've been studying this for 15 years, and I still can not believe cities and states are lined up begging to give money to these very profitable [teams]," Villanova professor Rick Eckstein, a stadium financing expert, told CNN.
