The liberal magazine The New Republic has admitted that Mitt Romney was correct when he said Russia is America's "No. 1 geopolitical foe," after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.

In an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer during his 2012 presidential campaign, Romney said, "Russia … is, without question, our No. 1 geopolitical foe. They fight every cause for the world's worst actors."

He said at the time that while other countries, such as Iran and North Korea, pose major international threats with their nuclear development, Russia always stands up for them, "typically with China alongside."

The comments at the time were widely mocked by the media, and President Barack Obama told his opponent in a debate, "the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back. Because the Cold War has been over for 20 years," The Daily Caller reported.

With the developments in Ukraine over the last week, the media may be reconsidering Romney's position.

The New Republic's Isaac Chotiner highlighted Romney's comments about Russia and said in an article Monday, "That all seems … exactly right."
