President Donald Trump has joined the fight to get the city council in St. Louis Park, Minnesota to keep saying the Pledge of Allegiance before its meetings.
The council had voted 5-0 on June 17 to stop reciting the pledge at most of its meetings, the Star Tribune noted. Its decision has sparked angry reaction.
And Trump tweeted Tuesday morning: “Outrage is growing in the Great State of Minnesota where our Patriots are now having to fight for the right to say the Pledge of Allegiance. I will be fighting with you!”
Nearly 100 people filled the council chambers on Monday demanding the council resign, the newspaper noted. The crowd waved American flags and recited the pledge several times.
“It’s a free country, protester Michele Even is quoted by WCCO-TV. “If you want to say it, you can say it. If you don’t want to say it, you don’t have to say it, but you shouldn’t have the right to take that choice away from me.”
The city is now considering reversing the decision or continuing discussion of the issue with members of the community, the Star Tribune reported.
