Donald Trump once believed Mike Pence was embarrassingly poor and chalked up the Indiana governor and his family as a bunch of "yokels," The Atlantic reports.
As he considered him as a possible running mate last summer, Trump had formed an opinion of Pence as "prudish, stiff, and embarrassingly poor," one associate told the magazine's McKay Coppins.
And while Trump eventually picked Pence, the vice president's modest wealth — his income reportedly has not been more than $200,000 a year for the past decade — allegedly irks Trump.
"When it was reported last January that the Pences would be moving some of their family pets — which include two cats, a rabbit, and a snake — into the Naval Observatory, Trump ridiculed the menagerie to his secretary, according to a longtime adviser," McKay writes.
"[Trump] was embarrassed by it; he thought it was so low class. He thinks the Pences are yokels," the adviser told the magazine.
