Boasting one of the potentially largest personal presidential campaign war chests for 2020, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is prepared to spend more than $100 million of his own money if he decides to run for president, according to a CNBC report.
"Mike spent more than $100 million in his last mayor's race," senior political strategist Howard Wolfson told CNBC in an email. "Last time I looked, NYC is a fraction of the size of the country as a whole."
Also, according to the report, Bloomberg plans to do it without outside money from political action committees and will spend "whatever is required."
"Mike has run for office three times and never took a dime of PAC money," Wolfson said. "Not sure why that would change now."
Bloomberg had already spent more than $110 million merely backing Democrats during the 2018 midterm elections. When asked if he would spend at least that on his own campaign, Wolfson replied, "Whatever is required."
Even as a self-funded candidate, Bloomberg will boast one of the largest 2020 war chests over the likes of former Vice President Joe Biden; Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J.; Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.; Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.; and Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas.
Former campaign manager for President Donald Trump, Corey Lewandowski had said in August that Bloomberg would be the Democrats' best chance at unseating the president.
"Bloomberg has all the financial [resources]," Lewandowski told a Christian Science Monitor breakfast. "He could literally write a check for $250 million tomorrow, and it's a rounding error in his bank account."
