Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto will award White House senior adviser Jared Kushner with the country’s highest honor for foreigners - the Order of the Aztec Eagle, the Reforma newspaper has reported.
Peña Nieto will reportedly present Kushner with the honor this Thursday at the Group of 20 summit in Argentina, which is likely to be one of Peña Nieto's last major acts as president. President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador is due to take office on Saturday.
Kushner's wife, Ivanka Trump, and Vice President Mike Pence are scheduled to represent the United States at the inauguration.
Kushner has been at the center of the relationship with Mexico since President Donald Trump entered the White House, according to The Hill.
This has been due in large part to his personal friendship with Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Videgaray.
People familiar with the volatile trade talks with Mexico told The Wall Street Journal that Kushner developed ties with Mexican officials, and his closeness to President Donald Trump as his son-in-law was leveraged at key moments.
This particularly included the ability to come to agreements on important issues concerning intellectual-property.
