White House Hails 4-Year-Low Rents Amid Inflation Wins

By    |   Monday, 02 February 2026 01:21 PM EST

A White House release Monday boasted that rents hit four-year lows as the administration continues its agenda to unwind former President Joe Biden-era inflation and cost hikes on everyday Americans.

"President Donald J. Trump is delivering real, immediate relief to American families struggling with high housing costs as the national median rent falls to its lowest level since 2022," the White House wrote in a statement.

"According to new data, rents posted their sixth straight monthly decline in January, with the largest annual drop in more than two years — down 6.2% from their Biden-era peak."

The memo noted data and analyst remarks, including to CNBC.

"Barring a major economic shock, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the more renter-friendly periods we've seen in a decade," Douglas Elliman real estate broker Michelle Griffith told CNBC.

The White House pointed to a wave of local and national reporting showing rent declines across major U.S. markets, including Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix, San Diego, Boston, and Dallas-Fort Worth.

The administration attributed the trend to Trump's broader housing strategy of expanding supply, cutting regulatory barriers, and encouraging builders to meet demand while emphasizing plans to restore what it calls the "American Dream of homeownership."

The press release also tied the rent decline to other economic indicators the White House says are improving, including lower gas prices, falling mortgage rates, wage gains, and tax relief measures.

"The progress reflects the early impacts of President Trump's comprehensive approach to housing — increasing supply, reducing bureaucratic barriers, and empowering builders to meet demand," the White House memo concluded.

"While renters enjoy this relief today, President Trump remains focused on restoring the American Dream of homeownership for all Americans, committed to building on this momentum with further reforms that deliver affordability now and the path to owning a home for generations to come."
