Former First Lady Melania Trump voiced her support Tuesday for a monument on the National Mall commemorating the women's suffrage movement.
"Wonderful to see bipartisan legislation introduced in the House to help secure a monument on the National Mall to tell the unique, moving, & powerful stories of women throughout American history," Trump tweeted.
Since leaving the White House in January 2021, the former first lady has generally stayed out of the public eye.
In the last couple of years, Trump has made few public appearances and seldom given interviews. Her limited public engagement has primarily consisted of posts on Twitter to mark holidays or promote her charitable endeavors.
Back in October, Trump tweeted that she was "honored to join @WomensMonument and serve as an Honorary Chair of the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation."
The bipartisan group is leading the effort to secure a women's monument on the National Mall and includes First Ladies Dr. Jill Biden, Trump, Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Rosalynn Carter.
The "Women’s Suffrage National Monument Location Act," or H.R. 1318, was introduced in the House last week by Reps. Joe Neguse, D-Colo., and Debbie Lesko, R-Alaska.
Timed to coincide with the beginning of Women's History Month, the legislation would "authorize the location of a monument on the National Mall to commemorate and honor the women’s suffrage movement and the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution."
A Senate version of the bill was sponsored last year by Sens. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc.
In December 2020, then-President Donald Trump signed a bill authorizing an outdoor women's suffrage monument. Securing its installation on the National Mall, however, that requires an act of Congress.
According to the Women’s Suffrage National Monument Foundation, fewer than 5% of national monuments in Washington, D.C., tell women’s stories.
The organization seeks to change that by establishing a national monument "to commemorate women's fight for the vote and honor the pioneers of the early American movement for women's equality."
