Meghan McCain: 'Still a Republican'

Meghan McCain on Monday cleared up reports that she was done with the Republican Party because it was “so tied up with being for” President Donald Trump.

“I said that I consider myself a conservative, first and foremost, before being a Republican — which, by the way, people like Ted Cruz say all the time. And then I also said I’m still on the party and I vote Republican on the ticket and I do going forward, but Trump gets nothing from me,” McCain said during a segment on ABC’s “The View.”

“And that has somehow been interpreted that I have led this mass exodus out of the Republican Party. It’s not true at all,” she added. “I am still a Republican, but not voting for Trump doesn’t necessarily mean you’re no longer a conservative.”

McCain, daughter of the late Sen. John McCain, on Saturday said she lamented what she sees as Trump’s stranglehold on Republicans, comments that fueled articles with titles like,  "Meghan McCain clarifies her politics on 'The View': 'I consider myself a conservative first."

"I think over 80-something percent of Republicans support President Trump and maybe they are doing it because they don’t have another option, but I think the populist Trump brand really has taken over," McCain said during an appearance on CNN’s "The Van Jones Show."

"Which is why there's this sort of no-mans-land that I'm in."
