Michael McFaul, the former U.S. ambassador to Russia, has been off the job since February, but says he's still being spied on.
McFaul told a group in Chicago on Friday that the Russians still are listening in on him and his wife, Donna Norton,
The New York Times reported.
Recently, McFaul said, his wife's boss called Norton's cell phone, "and a Russian answered it."
"Were they sloppy?" McFaul asked, "Or was that a shot across the bow to say, 'We know you'’re in Palo Alto and we're still around'?"
McFaul was constantly followed during his two years in Moscow, and once was stranded when officials revoked the license of his driver on the spot, the Times noted. Russian media doctored images of him to make him look like he was trying to start a coup.
Though McFaul was key to instituting President Barack Obama's "reset" policy with Russia, his tenure as ambassador began in 2012 just as President Vladimir Putin returned to the office of president, and anti-American sentiment was rising in Russia.
