Kayleigh McEnany, press secretary for President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, blasted “left-wing partisans” who are politicizing “the tragic mass shootings" in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.
Her comments came in a column posted on the Fox News website on Monday.
And she noted while some are scrambling to gain political advantage, President Donald Trump has “proposed common sense, bipartisan solutions that should be taken seriously.”
“On Monday, President Trump categorically condemned “racism, bigotry and white supremacy” and stated in no uncertain terms that “hate has no place in America,” she said.
“Additionally, the president laid out a number of concrete proposals to address mass shootings. The proposals ranged from instructing the Department of Justice to work with social media companies to ‘develop tools that can detect mass shooters before they strike’ to pursuing the death penalty for these perpetrators.”
She noted 85% of Americans back red flag laws and said: “Support for these laws is overwhelming for one simple reason: They work.”
McEnany said “red flag laws” “could go a long way in preventing these atrocities.”
“Though bipartisanship is rare in Washington, President Trump has extended an offer of reasonable reform that 85 percent of the nation endorses,” she said.
But she asked if Democratic lawmakers will stop politicizing the tragedies and accept Trump’s offer of changes.
“Time will tell,” she said.
