The golden arches are now as much a part of the Vatican as the Roman arch.

McDonald's opened a new restaurant just outside St. Peter's square, renting the space to the tune of a reported $31,000 per month, Fox 5 reported.

Its landlord? The Vatican.

And, according to one Cardinal, the new arches are a disgrace to the ancient ones.

"It's a controversial, perverse decision to say the least," Cardinal Elio Sgreccia said in an interview. It's "by no means respectful of the architectural traditions of one of the most characteristic squares which look onto the colonnade of Saint Peter's."
