The Washington Post should apologize to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for publishing an opinion piece that calls the senator a "Russian asset" for his opposition to election security legislation, President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday, The Hill reported.
"I think The Washington Post is a Russian asset by comparison," said Trump, who said he had not read the article.
"Mitch McConnell loves our country. He's done a great job," the president said. "If they actually said that, that Mitch McConnell is an asset of Russia, they ought to be ashamed of themselves, and they ought to apologize."
Trump added that McConnell "is a man that knows less about Russia and Russian influence than even Donald Trump, and I know nothing."
The opinion piece in the Post criticized McConnell for blocking election security bills backed by Democrats that would bolster protections against foreign attacks on American elections.
McConnell, who has received widespread criticism over the issue, compared the attacks against him to "modern-day McCarthyism" on Monday in the Senate.
"I was called unpatriotic, un-American and essentially treasonous by a couple of left-wing pundits on the basis of bold-faced lies," the majority leader said. "I was accused of aiding and abetting the very man I've singled out as an adversary and opposed for nearly 20 years, Vladimir Putin."
The issue was highlighted again last week when former special counsel Robert Mueller warned during his congressional testimony of ongoing efforts by foreign entities to interfere in American elections.
