Meghan McCain wants her father, the late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., left out of presidential politics in 2020.
After Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., who is running for president, mentioned John McCain in a speech in Iowa, Meghan McCain took to Twitter to make her feelings known.
She wrote on Monday: "On behalf of the entire McCain family - @amyklobuchar please be respectful to all of us and leave my fathers legacy and memory out of presidential politics.”
According to NBC News, Klobuchar had mentioned John McCain in an anecdote she recounted on the campaign trail.
"The arc that we are on, this arc of justice, started the day after that dark inauguration," Klobuchar said.
She recalled sitting on a stage listening to John McCain.
"John McCain kept reciting to me names of dictators during that speech, because he knew more than any of us what we were facing as a nation," she said. "He understood it. He knew because he knew this man more than any of us did."
Klobuchar has regularly praised John McCain in speeches and interviews, NBC News noted.
After McCain's tweet, Klobuchar's office said in a statement: "Senator Klobuchar had a long-time friendship with Senator McCain. She has defended him against President (Donald) Trump's attacks in the past, and she has deep respect for his family."
