McCain Remembers Bud Day: 'Bravest I Ever Knew'

By    |   Monday, 29 July 2013 11:07 PM EDT

Sen. John McCain celebrated the life of his Vietnam cellmate on the Senate floor, saying retired Col. George E. "Bud" Day was a fierce resistor who showed McCain "how to save my self-respect and my honor," CNN reports.

Day died Saturday at the age of 88.

In a statement Sunday, McCain called him the "bravest man I ever knew."

McCain, Day and another service member were imprisoned together at the 'Hanoi Hilton' after McCain, a Naval aviator, was shot down. McCain credits the two men, and Day most as their leader, for surviviving the ordeal.

They bathed me, fed me, nursed me, encouraged me and ordered me back to life," McCain said.
