Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has canceled plans to give away a "Texas-made shotgun" after a gunman used such a weapon while shooting to death 10 people at Santa Fe High School on Friday, Politico reported on Monday.
A spokesman for Abbott, a Republican, said the campaign raffle will go ahead, but the winner will instead receive a $250 gift card.
The webpage promoting the contest, which was launched on May 1, no longer has a picture of Abbott holding a shotgun, a change that was made following the massacre.
After the shooting, Abbott promised "swift" action to make schools safer, including holding a Tuesday roundtable to discuss the next steps.
Gun control activists had complained about the picture of Abbot with the shotgun following the shooting and pressed the governor over the weekend to delete if from the webpage.
Abbott easily defeated two Republican primary opponents in March and will now face either former Dallas County sheriff Lupe Valdez or Houston businessman Andrew White in the November general election, according to the Dallas News.
White had sent out a tweet criticizing Abbott for the picture used in the contest.
"If nominated on May 22, I won’t have to give away shotguns to get people to vote for me. Can you believe this?," the tweet said.
