Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg implied Wednesday that the social media network is a form of a media company.
Zuckerberg made the remark during a Facebook Live discussion with COO Sheryl Sandberg.
"Facebook is a new kind of platform. It's not a traditional technology company," Zuckerberg said, reports TechCrunch.
"It's not a traditional media company. You know, we build technology and we feel responsible for how it's used."
In another sign that Facebook thinks of itself as a kind of media company, it is now seeking to fill a "Head of News Partnerships" role that requires 20 years of experience in the news industry.
Facebook has made headlines in recent weeks because of reports that said fake news stories played a role in influencing last month's presidential election. The company has taken steps to prevent fake news from appearing on its platform, including an easier process for users to report what they feel is fake news.
