Rep. Taylor Greene: 'Loophole' in Ga. Trans Bill

By    |   Friday, 17 March 2023 10:31 AM EDT

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., took to Twitter this week to call out what she sees as a "dangerous loophole" in her state's transgender youth bill.

In a Thursday tweet, Greene said that while she supports the Georgia Legislature's efforts to "end the horrific practice of genital mutilation of children," SB 140 is "deeply flawed and could have many unintended consequences."

"In its current form, SB 140 does not achieve what it claims to be doing," Greene wrote. "In reality, if this becomes a law, no child will be protected from an overzealous doctor or from their own confusion. It allows the mutilation to continue under the guise of 'medical' necessity and doesn't do anything to prevent dangerous hormone therapy that destroys God's creation."

Greene's three-pronged critique of the legislation began by pointing out that the bill's "vague language" could result in it being "easily thrown out in the courts."

"Not only that, it could end up being cited as precedent leading to other state's stronger laws being challenged and removed," she said.

The measure also "doesn't address puberty blockers at all," Greene wrote.

"These dangerous drugs permanently alter the bodies of these confused children," she said. "This must be added to the final bill before passing the Senate.

"Finally, and most importantly, SB 140 includes a dangerous loophole that will be exploited by profiteering doctors who are ready to cut off the breasts of girls and castrate boys. This bill includes an outrageous 'medically necessary' provision. This means any doctor who is ready to put a child under the knife and perform permanent life-altering surgery simply has to claim it was 'necessary' to complete the barbaric procedure."

Greene said that if the bill is not amended in the state Senate, it would put Georgia "far behind states like Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi who have passed MUCH stronger laws to protect the innocence of children."

GOP-controlled states have led the push to ban "gender-affirming" care for transgender youth across the country, with supporters of such measures saying they are concerned minors are being harmed and opponents saying they are threatening transgender rights.

On Thursday, Leonardo Hinnant, an 18-year-old transgender man, told a Georgia House committee that he could not "imagine the pain and anguish I would have had to endure if I couldn't medically transition until 18," according to the Georgia Recorder. "If this bill passes, transgender kids will die."

State Sen. Carden Summers, who sponsored the bill, told Axios he did not think the legislation would cause an uptick in suicides among transgender children.

"I hope and pray that's not the case," he said.
