The U.S. Marine Corps used a new anti-drone system that is mounted to an all-terrain vehicle to down an Iranian drone on Thursday, Military.com reports.
The Marine Corps' Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System, also known as LMADIS, was able to jam a drone that President Donald Trump said came within 1,000 yards of a Navy vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a defense official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
"This is the latest of many provocative and hostile actions by Iran against vessels operating in international waters," Trump said. "The United States reserves the right to defend our personnel, our facilities and interests and calls upon all nations to condemn Iran's attempts to disrupt freedom of navigation and global commerce."
Military.com notes that the LMADIS is a maneuverable system that is installed on an MRZR, a type of Lightweight Tactical All Terrain Vehicle used by U.S. Special Operations Forces. The weapon uses radar and cameras to scan and detect drones in the air, and is able to distinguish between enemy and friendly drones. If it locates a hostile drone it can use radio frequencies to jam it, according to C4ISR.
