Border Patrol agents in southern Arizona seized two bundles of marijuana weighing more than 47 pounds total that were catapulted across the southern border from Mexico, CBS News has reported.
Agents made the discovery while patrolling an area east of the Douglas Port of Entry last Friday after they noticed several people running from the border fence as they approached.
"When agents arrived at the fence they found a catapult system attached to the south side of the border fence," according to a statement published on the Customs and Border Protection website. "They searched the area and located two bundles of marijuana."
Agents then contacted Mexican law enforcement authorities to help with the situation. The catapult system was dismantled and then seized by Mexican authorities.
CBP said its officials "welcome assistance from their law enforcement partners in Mexico, as well as U.S. citizens who often report suspicious activity to the Border Patrol."
Federal authorities say that in recent years there have been efforts by smugglers to increase the amount of drugs entering the United States.
They have done this by trying to find various ways to get more drugs into the country by both throwing bundles over the border or shooting them over the border wall with devices such as air-powered cannons and catapults, according to CBS.
