President Donald Trump’s suggestion to hold the 2020 G-7 summit at his resort in Florida is “a great idea,” Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said on Tuesday.

"It's down the street - not far from where I live," Rubio told reporters, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It's in Florida, I think it's a great idea."

Trump suggested during a press conference closing the most recent G-7 that his Trump National Doral Miami Golf Club would be a “great place” to host next year’s summit.

“It’s got tremendous acreage, many hundreds of acres, so we can handle whatever happens,” Mr. Trump said, according to The New York Times. “People are really liking it and plus it has buildings that have 50 to 70 units. And so each delegation can have its own building.”
"I want us to have as many events down there as we can," the senator added.

Trump’s suggestion was met with criticism over questions about the legality of hosting a major meeting of world leaders at a business with ties to the president.

“Trump would basically be compelling foreign governments to spend money at his personal resort, while promoting the resort on the world stage,” ethics lawyer Deepak Gupta told the Times. “That’s inconsistent with both the letter and the spirit of the Constitution. Trump’s use of his official position for personal gain is so blatant and pervasive that I don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like it from a previous U.S. president.”
