Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said Friday that President Donald Trump did not make "a real request" that China investigate former Vice President Joe Biden because he instead was "just needling the press."

"I don't know if that's a real request or him just needling the press, knowing that you guys were going to get outraged by it," Rubio, in his second term, told reporters at a news conference in the Florida Keys, CBS4Miami reports.

"He's pretty good at getting everybody fired up — and he's been doing it for awhile," he added. "The media responded right on task."

In talking to reporters outside the White House on Thursday, President Trump suggested that China "should start an investigation into the Bidens," referring to the former vice president and his son, Hunter.

Trump said he did not directly asked Chinese President Xi Jinping for such a probe but that it's "certainly something we could start thinking about."

Trump and personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani have tried to raise suspicions about Hunter Biden's business dealings, though no evidence has emerged that the former vice president benefited financially from his son's business dealings.

In Florida on Friday, a reporter asked Rubio again about Trump and China, framing the question within the context of the senator's frequent criticism of Beijing's human-rights abuses.

"I think he did it just to gig you guys," Rubio reiterated. "He did it to provoke you to ask me and others and to get outraged by it.

"He plays it like a violin and everyone falls into it," he added. "That's not a real request."
